The story so far
Let me introduce myself—I’m Penny Thorn, Owner, and Freelance Marketing Specialist at Abstract Marketing.
I’ve been in marketing for more than 25 years now, mostly working with B2B tech and telecom businesses across the UK and globally.
Abstract Marketing was born in 2016 from my passion for merging creativity with technical expertise to drive marketing success for tech companies.
I’ve had the privilege of partnering with a diverse array of clients, particularly in the education technology sector, including Anthology (formerly known as Blackboard), oMbiel (campusM), UniWellBeing, Interfolio, Solutionpath, JobTeaser, QSUnisolution, and Residential Management Systems (RMS).
My approach is all about flexibility—I’m here to provide my services on a freelance or contract basis, whether it’s for a specific project or ongoing support and consultancy when you have resource gaps or staff absences.

A little about me…
I studied ‘A’ Level Art and Design (1991-1993) and enjoyed it so much that I followed my creative aspirations and studied for a BSc Marketing and Visual Arts degree at Lancaster University (1993-1996).
During this period, I focused on professional practice including painting, drawing, graphic design, and typography; as well as studying modernist art history.
At this time, I also began my journey into marketing. I took modules in marketing theory and management, advertising, direct marketing, retail marketing, and organisational buying behaviour. This blend of disciplines allowed me to cultivate both my marketing acumen and my creative and technical skills (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Quark).
Beyond academia and work, I find fulfillment in various pursuits. As a member of the Port Sunlight Wheelers Cycling Club, I actively engage in cycling time trials and hill climbs. Furthermore, I hold qualifications as a Pilates Foundation teacher and engage in regular practice.
I enjoy following tennis. As a lifelong and avid follower of WTA and ATP Tour Tennis Tours, I can often be found listening to one of many tennis podcasts – relishing the narratives that unfold within the tennis world.
My love for outdoor activities and exploration has taken me on many adventures. From Interrailing at the age of 18, to Work America (BUNAC) in Nashville, and backpacking around the world at 22, I’ve always embraced independent travel and new experiences.
Now that you have a glimpse into my background and interests, I invite you to connect with me on LinkedIn. Feel free to explore my professional journey further and how we might be able to collaborate.
